New Castle Island Provincial Park: A must see when you visit Nanaimo! Hop on the five minute foot passenger ferry from Maffeo-Sutton Park (downtown waterfront) on one of Nanaimo’s famous ‘pickle boats’. Gorgeous beaches, a small lake, trails for hiking and biking, and a historic pavilion with cafe. New Castle Island is a wonderful day trip for the whole family.
Little Qualicum Falls: A great way to spend the day taking in all the gorgeous waterfalls. The park is approximately a 35 minute drive north of Brannen Lake Campsite. Pack a picnic lunch and lace up your hiking shoes – the gorgeous loop around the waterfall and across their two bridges is a great work out. Spectacular scenery you won’t soon forget!
Colliery Dam: This is a great nearby park with numerous forested trails and awesome spots for fresh water fishing. This park surrounds the small lake stocked with trout, its dam and various bridges over chutes of rushing water. A freshwater fishing license is required for fishing.
Wild Play Elements Park: Looking for your next adrenalin rush? Check out Tree Go aerial adventure park, bungy jumping, rapid rappelling, zip lines, and more – all only 15 minutes south of Brannen Lake Campsite. Learn the ropes and skills of climbing and then go bungy jumping from their bridge over the Nanaimo River canyon!
Nanaimo Aquatic Centre: This fantastic facility boasts a wave pool, Water Park, indoor water slides, hot tub, diving, competition/lengths pool, steam room, sauna, fitness machines, childminding, and cafeteria. The center is only 10 minutes away from Brannen Lake Campsite. Follow the link below to get the schedules and pricing for this facility, as well as the other indoor and outdoor pools in Nanaimo.
Mt. Washington Alpine Resort: This resort is world renowned for its fantastic skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing conditions. In the summer the mountain doesn’t slow down – it then caters to world class hiking, and downhill mountain biking. For the less daring, head up the mountain and enjoy lunch and a scenic chairlift ride. Clear days show off the incredible panoramic view of the surrounding mountains as well as the ocean! The resort located just outside of Courtenay, and just over an hour north of Brannen Lake Campsite.
Coombs Country Market: One of our favourite things to do in the summer! Famously known for their goats on the roof – Coombs Country Market is a fun way to spend the day browsing through their eclectic stores shopping imported gifts, international foods, the in-store bakery, and endless flavours of ice cream.

Nanaimo Golf Club: Beautiful course overlooking Departure Bay measuring 6,667 meters from start to finish only 5 minutes from Brannen Lake Campsite.
Fairwinds Golf and Country Club: Fairwinds is set on 1,350 acres near Nanoose Bay, a 15 minute drive from Brannen Lake Campsite.
Riptide Lagoon Mini Golfing: Located just south of Parksville, this fun mini golf course will be a hit with the whole family! Only 20 minutes from Brannen Lake Campsite.
Nanaimo Great Canadian Casino: Feeling lucky? Try your hand at blackjack, or play the slots at Nanaimo’s Casino in the heart of downtown. Only 10 minutes from Brannen Lake Campsite.
The Dinghy Dock Pub: Check out Vancouver Islands only floating pub! This family friendly pub has great food, live music, and gorgeous views of Protection Island and the Nanaimo Harbour. Click the link below to find pub hours, menu, and ferry schedule.
Cathedral Grove Provincial Park: Take a walk through this spectacular park of protected old growth forest. The world famous 800 year old fir trees are so large they resemble cathedrals. A visit you won’t soon forget – located approximately 45 minutes north of Brannen Lake Campsite.
The Nanaimo Wastelands Motocross Track: This track is located just a couple kilometres up the road from Brannen Lake Campsite. This is a great track for all levels of motorbike riders. Check out their website for information on memberships and day passes.
North Island Wildlife Recovery Association: Located just north of Nanaimo, this non profit facility is a great place to see eagles, many species of owls, falcons, hawks, ravens and black bears. Through the summer months there are also live raptor presentations. Help support the rehabilitation of these wild animals while getting up close with these wild creatures! Only 20-25 minutes north of Brannen Lake Campsite
